As part of the construction of the escape and rescue tunnel, the existing Landeck Tunnel will not only be brought up to the required safety standards by 2030, but will also undergo a complete refurbishment.

To minimise environmental impact, a wide range of measures has been detailed as part of the regulatory approval process. To ensure compliance with the approved plans and regular reporting, an Environmental Construction Monitoring service was commissioned. The BERNARD Gruppe has been entrusted with this task since October 2025. In addition, the service covers the monitoring of springs and wells as well as geotechnical testing. The role of Environmental Construction Monitoring is not limited to monitoring measures, but also involves ongoing integration into the construction process and, in particular, constructive collaboration in addressing any challenges that arise. In the course of construction, situations frequently arise which, in view of their potential impact on surrounding habitats, usually need to be clarified swiftly. For example, it is often necessary to coordinate construction activities with regard to sensitive periods, such as amphibian migrations or bird breeding seasons. The documentation of requirements relating to site boundaries, lighting concepts, water management during construction, etc., as well as the professional management of invasive plant species, necessitate the regular on-site presence of the Environmental Construction Monitoring team. One challenge posed by the project is the very limited space available at the tunnel portals and the proximity of existing high-priority transport infrastructure, as well as the need to minimise restrictions on its use. As the Environmental Construction Monitoring contractor, the BERNARD Gruppe will oversee the A12 Landecker Tunnel project (escape and rescue routes, Road Tunnel Security Regulations and general refurbishment) until 2033, as the implementation of the recultivation measures also falls within its remit following the completion of the main construction works.
