In March 2026, the local hearing for the railway authorisation of the Hungarian border–Gleisdorf section of the electrification project was held at Feldbach Town Hall.
As part of a consortium, the BERNARD Gruppe has been commissioned for the above-mentioned section in the permit application and execution design phases. In addition to electrifying the approximately 80 km-long line, the project includes the construction of numerous switching frames and two switching stations, the installation of a frequency converter in Studenzen, and the construction of an underground feeder line linking the converter to the Studenzen-Fladnitz switching station. It further comprises modifications to track layouts at selected stations, an increase in line speed, and track renewals between the Hungarian border and Fehring station. The electrification of the Styrian Ostbahn supports climate and energy targets, reduces noise, and enables higher service frequencies and shorter journey times through increased line speeds and improved acceleration of electric rolling stock. It simplifies freight transport, improves rerouting options, connects networks and ensures more uniform operational management. Key measures planned by BERNARD Gruppe include realigning tracks at Feldbach and Studenzen-Fladnitz stations to accommodate overhead line masts, as well as the removal of a platform island that no longer meets current safety standards, together with the associated track in Gleisdorf. In Gleisdorf, a new turnout will also be installed, enabling the respective track to be used as a siding from both directions.
