With the state-wide model project “Clearing Sidewalks – Creating Space for Walking”, the state of Baden-Württemberg is providing a clear impetus for sustainable and barrier-free mobility development. Four model municipalities – Balingen, Heilbronn, Pforzheim and Stuttgart – are launching a structured process to systematically remove obstacles from central footpaths. The BERNARD Gruppe is supporting this project on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport.

The aim is to implement the “Clearing Sidewalks” action area of the state’s pedestrian traffic strategy and to permanently secure the usable width of sidewalks. Garbage cans, traffic sign poles, distribution boxes, parking ticket machines, e-charging columns or parked vehicles often restrict freedom of movement considerably. Particularly in town centers, on school routes and along important main pedestrian routes, this creates conflicts of use that impair accessibility and road safety. The BERNARD Gruppe is contributing its expertise to the project by analysing, evaluating, and structuring complex traffic areas. Building on this, practicable solutions are being developed in workshops with the administration, companies and other stakeholders. The aim is to establish clear standards and permanent routines for obstacle-free walkways. With this project, the BERNARD Gruppe is making its contribution to sustainable mobility and the further development of urban spaces.
