More safety, better processes:
The BERNARD Gruppe is planning a sustainable transport solution for Hohenems.
The transport connection around the Hohenems motorway junction is being rethought. On behalf of the state of Vorarlberg and the Austrian motorway provider ASFINAG, the BERNARD Gruppe is planning a comprehensive road construction project that combines several key objectives: relieving congestion at a highly frequented motorway junction, improving road safety, and a targeted infrastructure development.
At the heart of the project is the expansion of the existing roundabout into an efficient large roundabout. The L46 rural road will be redesigned and, among other things, extended to include a truck checkpoint. The organization of the vignette sales areas and access to the motorway maintenance depot will also be reorganized. Another important intervention is planned at the intersection of the rural roads L203 and L46: The existing roundabout will be replaced by a traffic light-controlled intersection. In addition, a new access road is being created with the “Spange Süd”, which will not only open up the industrial estate, but also relieve the L46 from through traffic. The L203 is being completely renovated over a length of around 716 meters – including new footpaths and crossing facilities for pedestrians. At the same time, new cycle paths are being built throughout the project area. Particularly noteworthy: the extension of the existing motorway underpass to include a cycle path with a connection to the supra-regional bicycle path network. In addition to road planning, the BERNARD Gruppe is also responsible for the renovation planning of all bridges and culverts involved. Construction is scheduled to start in fall 2026 – without disrupting traffic. Due to the cramped conditions and high traffic volumes, traffic guidance during the construction period represents a planning challenge that is being met with innovative solutions.
The project is part of a series of current infrastructure projects in Vorarlberg in which the BERNARD Gruppe is involved, all aiming at making mobility efficient, safe and sustainable.
