The BERNARD Gruppe was commissioned by the Brandenburg state capital of Potsdam to evaluate the coordination of bicycle and motorized traffic on the Breite Straße avenue.

Once the traffic light planning, supply and fine-tuning of 4 traffic light systems had been completed, we were commissioned to assess the implemented measures. The focus was on recording the volume of bicycle and motor vehicle traffic jams before, during, and after the green light clearance.

The evaluations showed that not only signal programs in key sections had been successfully implemented, but also the traffic light coordination in both directions and across all times of day.

The data-based analysis and evaluation of the coordination conditions also served the purpose of submitting recommendations for action and practicable situation-specific deployment conditions for the municipality. The resulting opportunities for a flexible green wave adapted to the situation include traffic load- or congestion-dependent criteria as well as weather influences for bicycle traffic. In addition, dynamic displays for driving speed are recommended for both road user groups to support safe driving behavior in line with the traffic situation and expectations on both sides.
