Project Highlights 2021

Power grid expansion and hydropower expansion | Energy Business Unit
The BERNARD Gruppe is contributing to the expansion of the grid in Germany with the Fulda project and in Austria with the 380 kV Salzburg line. Together with partner Arcadis, the BERNARD Gruppe was commissioned with planning services for TenneT’s “Fulda-Main line” in order to increase the transmission capacity from renewable energies between northern and southern Germany. In the course of the modernization of existing power lines of APG (Austrian Power Grid), alternative wind power generation is to be used to transport electricity to the west of Austria.

With regard to the expansion of the Stubachtal power plant group in Salzburg, the BERNARD Gruppe, together with partner AFRY, has been commissioned to provide planning and project management services for the Tauernmoos pumped storage power plant. The breakthrough to the future cavern power plant took place in the summer.

Vienna underground extension, Koralm Tunnel communications technology and Elephants | Industry Business Unit
In the context of the station expansion of the public transport system in Vienna, the BERNARD Gruppe has been commissioned by Wiener Linien with the overall monitoring at Matzleinsdorfer Platz. Minimal changes in the position of critical existing structures are immediately detected by means of permanent structure monitoring.

The Koralm Tunnel is part of a key link within the Trans-European Network.  In addition to planning the entire communication technology with fibre optic infrastructure, radio, data and transmission technology, the BERNARD Gruppe has also been commissioned with tunnel construction planning, construction management and construction supervision since 2010.

The BERNARD Gruppe has been commissioned by the Asian Development Bank to develop a proof-of-concept system to prevent collisions between elephants and trains in Bangladesh.

Brenner Base Tunnel incl. feeder lines and Suedlink | Infrastructure Business Unit
The BERNARD Gruppe in ARGE with Geoconsult, IGT and Pini Swiss is responsible for local construction supervision and contract management for the BBT (Brenner Base Tunnel) in Austria as well as for the access routes in Germany on behalf of DB Netz AG. Together with partner DB E&C, planning services for German buildings will be carried out using the BIM (Building Information Modeling) process. The BERNARD Gruppe has been involved in the BBT project since the submission phase. The Brenner Base Tunnel, 64 kilometer long, is the longest railway tunnel in the world and is therefore considered one of the most important infrastructure projects in the European Union.

Within the framework of the Suedlink project, dialogue meetings were held this year in which our experts provided information on soil protection, routing, environmental monitoring and rights of way. Among other things, intensive subsoil investigations as well as the mapping of biotope types and forestry mapping were carried out on behalf of TenneT and TransnetBW.

Capacity expansion Cologne, NOx reduction and Bicycle traffic concepts | Mobility Business Unit
The BERNARD Gruppe was also able to win the planning of the construction project for the capacity expansion of the East-West axis in Cologne.
In order to improve the air quality in the city of Herrenberg, a comprehensive bundle of measures could be implemented, for example, through dynamic traffic guidance and control in the urban road network.

The BERNARD Gruppe also successfully presented, among other things, the feasibility study for a direct bicycle connection between Otterfing and Gmund, as well as a connection for a bicycle highway to Munich, which is considered a “lighthouse project for the region”.
